Goal of the study
We are pilot testing a comprehensive self-management program. We hope to learn what people with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis; Crohn’s disease) think of the program and if it is helpful for them or not.
About the study
The entire study is conducted remotely. There are no in-person visits. The entire length of the study is about 7 months.
Data collection
At the beginning of the study and again after 3-months, you will: record the food you eat for three days, provide a stool sample (we will provide you with the stool sample collection materials and shipping supplies/information), and complete online questionnaires.
After 6-months you will: complete online questionnaires and have a phone interview and answer questions about how we can improve the study for others.
Each time you provide data (beginning of the study, 3 months, and 6 months), you will receive a $50 gift card.
Randomization
You will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to either the comprehensive self-management program or usual care group. For every three people who participate in this study, two will be assigned to the program and one will be assigned to the control group. After the first data collection, we will contact you to let you know which group you are in.
Comprehensive Self-Management Program:
If you are assigned to the program: You will receive access to a website with information about how to manage symptoms. The program covers: tips for healthy eating, abdominal breathing, problem solving, pain management, sleep, eating out, and developing a comprehensive plan to manage symptoms. For 8 weeks, each week you will: review some of the information on your own (15-20 min/week), meet with an IBD coach (a registered nurse) to review the content and answer any questions that you may have (less than 30 min/week)
Continue Usual Care:
If you are assigned to continue with usual care, you will continue receiving normal care through your IBD provider during the study.
