ITHS co-PI Bonnie Ramsey receives Warren Alpert Foundation prize for groundbreaking research in Cystic Fibrosis

Congratulations to Dr. Bonnie Ramsey for being recognized by the Warren Alpert Foundation in this year’s annual prize. Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a hereditary disorder, affects over 70,000 people worldwide. The disease causes abnormally thick mucus to build-up in the lungs, pancreas and other organs limiting one’s ability to breathe; in the 1950s children born with CF were only expected to live a couple of months. Now, the median age of survival is as high as 40 years old.

The interdisciplinary clinical work Dr. Ramsey has led include a large multi-site study of new treatment options and the leadership of a massive coordination center called the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics Development Network (TDN) to help further research efforts.

Dr. Ramsey shares the award with four of her colleagues: Francis Collins, Lap-chee Tsui, Paul Negulescu, and Michael Welsh.
