The larger group enriches the KL2 Cohort by creating more opportunities for peer engagement and adding more diverse research perspectives. In addition, the program continues to expand the representation of different cultures and social backgrounds, which has a positive impact on innovation. This diversity brings together a multitude of lived experiences, perspectives, thinking styles, and translational expertise, fostering multi-perspective discussions that prompt alternative views, elevating KL2 science.
KL2 Seminar Fellows are full participants in the KL2 Career Development Curriculum, which includes:
- Interactive seminars: The program provides in-depth training on skills and competencies critical to conducting translational research. Over the course of a three-year appointment, scholars can expect to receive training in all of the CTSA-designed Core Competencies for Translational Research. Seminars also include opportunities for scholars to hone their presentation and writing skills through Works-in-Progress talks and writing workshops.
- Mentorship: KL2 scholars receive additional mentorship from KL2 faculty to complement their career development in translational research.
Eligibility & How To Apply to be a KL2 Fellow
Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (WWAMI) Faculty that are in an early-career stage (e.g. within 3 years of starting a tenure-track Assistant Professor position) interested in joining the KL2 Seminar Fellows Program.
How to Apply
The KL2 Seminar Fellows Program application consists of:
- standard demographic information
- research background information (NIH biosketch or similar)
- information on your active or planned translational research efforts (specific aims page or similar)
- additional information may be requested via email after an initial review

About the ITHS KL2 Program
The ITHS KL2 Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development program provides the time, funding, mentorship, and training necessary to foster the early career development of clinical and translational researchers. The program is funded by the NIH and welcomes scholars from all health professions.
KL2 scholars are appointed for three years of support. The program encourages all types of clinical research, including patient-oriented research, translational research, small- and large-scale clinical investigation and trials, epidemiologic and natural history studies, health services research, and health behavior research.
