Institute of Translational Health Sciences

The Institute of Translational Health Sciences offers resources that increase the speed at which scientific discoveries can be translated into treatments and clinical practices that improve health outcomes for patients and communities. More than 6,000 researchers from nearly 200 different institutions across the five-state WWAMI region have collaborated with us to attract grant funding, build their research teams, develop research tools, move research projects forward, and engage with patients and the community.

UW Department of Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington has a distinguished history of offering medical education and conducting research throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho (the WWAMI states). The Department also provides leadership for core curriculum in the School of Medicine and is recognized for its research and academic programs in rural communities, including its support for the WWAMI region Practice and Research Network. With over 1000 clinical faculty members located throughout the WWAMI region, and over 50 regular faculty located at the University site in Seattle, the Department is one of the largest of its kind in the country.

NWA PGRN

Northwest-Alaska Pharmacogenomics Research Network (NWA-PGRN)

The Pharmacogenomics Research Network (PGRN) is a nationwide collaboration of scientists studying the effect of genes on people’s responses to a wide variety of medicines. The University of Washington established the Northwest-Alaska Pharmacogenomics Research Network (NWA-PGRN) to address pharmacogenomic research in American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) and rural Pacific Northwest populations. It is one of 14 Centers funded by the National Institutes of Health.
