History of the Collaborative

The collaborative grew out of the Consultation Working Group of the Clinical Research Ethics Key Function Committee of the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) consortium, funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), which was established in 2008 and dissolved in 2014.

Established in 2014, the Collaborative continues the activities of the Consultation Working Group to advance the NCATS CTSA initiative.

Key achievements

  • Published manuscript on results of a 2010 survey of consultation services administered across 46 CTSA institutions (2013).
  • Received a one year supplemental award from NCATS to create a system for CTSAs to share research bioethics consult data across institutions in a database for research, quality improvement and education (2010).
    As a result, we:

  • Created a shared repository representing 10 institutions’ records of consult activity (2012).
  • Published a manuscript on ethical and professional practice challenges and recommendations (2015).
  • Published a manuscript on the creation of the central repository and recommendations for standardization (2015).

  • Wrote report for the VA National Center for Ethics in Health Care about the current status of clinical and translational research ethics consultations at U.S. academic medical centers (2012).
  • Created a forum for quarterly conference calls to discuss interesting cases (2013).
  • Established a semi-annual series of “challenging research ethics cases” in the American Journal of Bioethics (2013).
  • Published a manuscript on the experiences of the Collaborative and four contexts where clinical research ethics consultation can add value
