Dr. Basu works at the interface of microeconomics, statistics and health policy. His work has enriched the theoretical foundations of comparative and cost effectiveness analyses. He has developed innovative methods to study heterogeneity in clinical and economic outcomes in order to establish the value of individualized care. His primary interests are in causal inference methods, program evaluation and outcomes research.

Dr. Basu is an Associate Editor for Health Economics, Journal of Health Economics and Observational Studies. He has taught courses on health economics, decision analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis and health services research methods. He is one of the panelists working to update the Gold et al. book on recommendations for cost-effectiveness analysis in Health and Medicine.

Dr. Basu is the recipient of numerous awards, including the NARSAD Wodecroft Young Investigator Award for his work on modeling the long-term risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease due to atypical antipsychotics medications in patients with schizophrenia, the 2007 Research Excellence Award for Methodological Excellence and the 2009 Bernie O’Brien New Investigator Award from the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, the 2008 Alan Williams Health Economics Fellowship from the University of York, UK and the 2009 Labelle Lectureship from McMaster University, Canada.

Dr. Basu was a faculty at the University of Chicago from 2004-2010.
