The Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) is a collaborative hub dedicated to accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into improved health outcomes. Serving the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho), ITHS connects researchers, healthcare providers, and community organizations to advance translational science. By fostering partnerships and providing access to critical resources, the institute bridges the gap between research and real-world impact, with a strong focus on health equity and innovation. Whether addressing pressing public health challenges or supporting groundbreaking research, ITHS plays a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare.
To empower researchers and institutions, ITHS offers a wide range of resources and services. For example, the Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) program provides expert consultation and training to ensure robust and effective study designs. Community Engagement works to increase community involvement and promotes research that will address priorities and health outcomes in diverse communities. The ITHS Education Program supports investigators, graduate students, scholars, and research support staff through the development and maintenance of curriculum and career development education.
Check out the full list of ITHS modules below, and follow the links to find the services and resources that will best suit your needs as graduate student, early career researcher, entrepreneur, research staff, or experienced faculty. ITHS has what you need to take your research to the next level.
Biostatistical services play a pivotal, collaborative role in biomedical research. The ITHS Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) core coordinates biostatistical collaboration for investigators and trainees at every stage of the research study, from the initial trial design stage to the final reporting phase.
The Biomedical Informatics (BMI) team assists investigators with extracting useful data from electronic medical record data sources. We also host and support several free self-service tools for research data capture and exploration of de-identified cohorts.
The ITHS Community Engagement program is committed to facilitating community-academic research partnerships in eastern Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) that are true collaborations. We aim to increase community involvement in every stage of research. We promote research that will address priorities and health outcomes in the communities and practices we work with, and support these communities in becoming more engaged and savvy about research.
By building and maintaining a robust research network, the Hub Liaison Team (HLT) enhances access to resources, expertise, and infrastructure, supporting the development of innovative health solutions. Their efforts ensure that research initiatives can quickly scale and that knowledge is shared efficiently, driving advancements in healthcare across the region.
Integrating Special Populations (ISP) is a program focused on increasing engagement, enrollment, and retention of children, youth, and older adults, particularly from racially/ethnically and economically diverse populations, in research. ISP develops services and training for investigators and community organizations to enable this increased diversity.
The ITHS Pilots Program offers funding to help investigators get started with exciting new translational research projects. The Pilots Program is particularly focused on fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and accelerating the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice, with an emphasis on addressing health disparities and enhancing public health outcomes.
Regulatory Knowledge & Support (RKS) plays a critical role in advancing biomedical research while ensuring compliance with ethical standards and federal regulations. RKS provides expert guidance to researchers navigating complex regulatory landscapes, including Institutional Review Board submissions, FDA approvals, and adherence to Good Clinical Practice guidelines. By offering tailored consultations, training programs, and resources through RKS, ITHS helps streamline the approval processes for clinical trials and other research projects, empowering investigators to focus on scientific innovation while maintaining rigorous regulatory standards.
Team Science provides a number of offerings and services to help research teams become more efficient and effective by building stronger team dynamics and processes. Team Science services include various resources to improve you and your team’s skills in enhancing communication, building trust, managing research, providing supportive leadership and demonstrating problem-solving communications.
The ITHS Technology Development Center (TDC) is staffed with clinical, regulatory, and commercialization experts to assist academic and industry innovators through translation, startup formation, clinical study, regulatory clearance, fundraising, and market entry. No matter where you are on your journey to commercialization, TDC can help you find the services, funding, and programs you need to move you forward.
ITHS Translational Workforce Development (TWD) offers classes, workshops and other educational resources to investigators and other research professionals to help them advance their careers as well as their scientific discoveries.
The ITHS TL1 program is a one-year mentored research training program in translational science for predoctoral students. This program creates a cross-disciplinary community of emerging researchers and provides them with specific training, career development opportunities, and team science skills to help them function effectively within translational science teams.
The ITHS KL2 Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Career Development program provides the time, funding, mentorship, and training necessary to foster the early career development of clinical and translational researchers. The 3-year program is funded by the NIH and welcomes scholars from all health professions.
The institute also supports community-engaged research through its Community-Centered Collaborations, fostering partnerships that address local health needs. Additionally, ITHS’s Regional Research Collaborations expand access to clinical trials, bringing innovative treatments to underserved populations across the WWAMI region.
