Are you part of our translational science support network yet?
The Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) moves research from one phase of the translational science spectrum to the next, and helps others to do the same. From bench to bedside: we take great ideas and help turn them into reality with the aim of improving health outcomes across the spectrum.
Whether you’re developing new approaches, demonstrating their usefulness, or disseminating the findings, ITHS can support you. We offer a wide array of professional development trainings at no charge, opportunities for mentorship, and most initial consultations are also free. And – our monthly newsletter tracks key opportunities for training, networking, funding and delivers them straight to your inbox! Get connected to your research community and level up with ITHS!

Our structured training programs give graduate and post-doc researchers the skills, knowledge and mentorship they need in the early stages of a research career. Continuing education programs help investigators and research staff keep their skills up-to-date.
The ITHS funding programs offer pilot awards to help researchers generate initial data or results demonstrating the feasibility and merits of a larger project.
Biomedical Informatics assists with extracting useful data from electronic medical record data sources, as well as research data capture and exploration of de-identified cohorts. Biostatistics offers expert advice on topics such as study design, data collection, and analysis methods. The Bioethics Consult Service provides in-depth conversation and analysis of ethical issues in clinical and translational research.
The Research Coordination Center (RCC) is a multidisciplinary team of research coordinators, regulatory specialists, and study monitors who can support the design and conduct of clinical and translational research. Whether you need support with your IRB application, recruitment and study implementation, or compliance, the RCC has you covered.
If you are looking to recruit for your studies, ITHS has your back. The Recruitment Support Service provides strategic, project-specific recruitment advice to help you meet enrollment goals. Posting your study on our Participate in Research (PiR) website is another tool to connect with potential participants.
ITHS offers access to a number of research units to support the work of investigators. The Translational Research Unit (TRU) at the UW Medical Center has dedicated inpatient and outpatient facilities, specially trained nurses and support staff, laboratory services, and state-of-the-art equipment. The Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC) at Seattle Children’s provides an environment and resources for the multidisciplinary conduct of clinical research in children.
The ITHS Community Engagement team supports a number of research networks, tools and programs that will help you connect and collaborate with communities throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho and beyond! The Integrating Special Populations (ISP) program develops services and training for investigators and community organizations to enable more racial/ethnic and economic diversity of youth and older adults in research.
The ITHS Technology Development Center (TDC) is staffed with experts to assist academic and industry innovators through translation, startup formation, clinical study, regulatory clearance, fundraising, and market entry.
When you face barriers to your research, the Research Navigator is there to lead you to funding, training, forms, collaborations and more. Contact us today to get started on your research journey with ITHS!
TWD oversees and provides career development, mentoring, and continuing educational opportunities in translational science to trainees, research staff, investigators, and community partners across WWAMI. Each year, TWD offers more than 20 career development seminars, as well as longer, more in-depth training events.
The mission of our KL2 Institutional Career Development Program is to train future leaders in translational science by providing the time, funding, mentorship, and training necessary to foster the early career development of clinical and translational researchers. Our program offers early career faculty up to 3 years of support.
The mission of our TL1 pre-doctoral multidisciplinary translational research training program is to develop young investigators from across the WWAMI region into successful translational scientists capable of working in multidisciplinary teams. We deliver a 12-month interactive translational science curriculum that integrates with trainees’ existing doctoral research and education activities.
Established in 2018, the HLT sits at the center of a hub-and-spoke model of a team of subject matter experts in key institutional processes (including human subjects protections, sponsored programs, CTO, and research IT), FDA/health law, and bioethics as well as several ITHS programs. The team has led effective engagement between ITHS organizations and the national Trial Innovation Network (TIN) and provides guidance to research teams on participant recruitment and retention.
In previous years, RKS was instrumental in establishing centralized Clinical Trial Offices (CTOs) at UW and Seattle Children’s to unify clinical research services under a single umbrella. The new CTOs joined the Fred Hutch CTO in developing and sharing clinical trials processes to streamline study startup within partner institutions. RKS partners have provided consistent availability and delivery of RC services and support to hundreds of clinical trials and research studies across our institutions. We are now expanding collaborations to make clinical research processes, education, and support more effective and efficient, while also adapting our CTO model to serve preclinical translation.
PCI provides services to investigators for study development, participant recruitment and enrollment, protocol implementation and completion, and timely dissemination of results. Activities of PCI are conducted across the NW PCI Network.
Established in 2017, ITHS ISP seeks to increase engagement of underrepresented children and older adults in research across our partners. In the prior grant cycle, we established our Health Equity Community Advisory Council, which continues to partner with ISP to set strategy and co-create resources for investigators and communities. Efforts focus on improving equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) among both the research workforce and research practices.
The ITHS CE program develops high-functioning, interdisciplinary teams of community partners and academic investigators through matching, training, and coaching. CE has long-standing research partnerships with clinicians and clinical systems, patients, and community-based organizations.
Team Science continues to develop and update best practices in team science education and training (TSET), with the goal of improving the functioning of interdisciplinary teams across multiple settings, while they also need recognition of interdisciplinary collaborative research contributions in academic promotion and tenure processes (APT).
The ITHS Pilot Program augments career development and progression by funding innovative, interdisciplinary projects to generate data necessary for publication, substantial funding, and other key milestones.
BERD develops and disseminates statistical methods and software tools originating from its leadership in the conduct of clinical trials and supporting development of rigorous designs and analytical methods. We continue to provide BERD consultation, collaboration, and education to researchers through two linked subunits at the Seattle Children’s and UW. These groups provided biostatistical and data management support to more than 200 projects by investigators in the past year.
The ITHS BMI Core, along with informatics collaborators at partner institutions and nationally, facilitates translational research and implementation of innovation through technology and data.
Whether you are just starting in your translational research career or you’ve been running multi-site clinical trials for years, ITHS is ready to help you get to the next level. Sign up for membership to take advantage of all of our services or subscribe to our Research Connector newsletter to get the latest information about funding and programs to support your work.
