In this session, Carol Haywood, PhD, OTR/L will discuss underrecognized health care disparities experienced by people with disabilities in the United States, highlighting findings from studies that examined patient and physician perspectives to understand barriers to equitable care. Dr. Haywood will also discuss opportunities to advance health care equity for people with disabilities, including the use of human-centered design and implementation science approaches to develop pragmatic and effective interventions.

Carol Haywood, PhD, OTR/L, is a research assistant professor in the Department of Medical Social Sciences and the Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She formerly worked as an occupational therapist at the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (formerly, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago), where challenges for individuals and their families with acute and chronic disability motivated her pursuit of research steeped in real-world experiences of people with disabilities. She completed a PhD in occupational science at the University of Southern California and a postdoctoral fellowship in health services and outcomes research at Northwestern University.
Dr. Haywood studies disability experience in a variety of contexts, including health care navigation and day-to-day life in home and community. She has focused on intersections of disability and psychosocial development in adolescence and young adulthood, roles of informal caregivers for people with disabilities, and health services coordination and navigation. Dr. Haywood uses qualitative methods and community-engaged research approaches to center her work on the needs and priorities of the communities she studies. She has been funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, and the Craig H. Nielsen Foundation. With support of her KL2 at Northwestern University, she is examining health care access and participation for people with mobility-related disabilities and validating concepts for measures of health care quality. Her work is driven by a vision of health care that facilitates equity for people with disabilities.
