Tong Sun is Executive Director of the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) and Assistant Dean for Translational Health Sciences. Tong received a B.S. in Microbiology at Wuhan University, China, a M.S. in Virology and Gene Therapy at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business.
Prior to his appointment at University of Washington, Tong served as Vice President of Central Operations for Houston Methodist Research Institute (HMRI), where he was responsible for the development, oversight, and operational implementation of the HMRI Translational Research Initiative (TRI), which is a novel program that provides an internal “angel fund” investment for Houston Methodist’s medical product development. Tong established and directed the Office for Strategic Research Initiatives (OSRI), which provided support for program project grants applications, pilot projects management and major philanthropy proposal development. During his time at HMRI, he established and/or oversaw the operations in cGMP manufacturing and quality, regulatory affairs, and shared technical core facilities including the cGMP core, Cyclotron radiopharmaceutical core, and Translational Imaging cores (PET/CT, MRI and Small Animal Imaging).
Tong holds adjunct faculty appointment at Cameron School of Business, The University of St. Thomas-Houston, where he co-developed and co-directed a Master’s degree program of Clinical Translation Management (MCTM). He also holds appointments as Honorary Professor at Swansea University Medical School, Swansea, UK, and Adjunct Industry Advisor at The College of Material Sciences and Opto-electronic Engineering of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China.
