Pediatric Clinical Research Center

The Seattle Children’s Research Institute (SCRI) – Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC) is a core resource within the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) Clinical Research Center Network.

The Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC) at Seattle Children’s provides an environment and resources for the multidisciplinary conduct of clinical research in children less than 21 years of age. The facility enables the study of a broad spectrum of human pathophysiology and diseases as well as commonly encountered clinical disorders. In addition to providing outpatient services, PCRC nurses can conduct research activities in other hospital areas including inpatient units, ER, OR, and ambulatory clinics.

Our Expertise

PCRC research nurses are trained in Good Clinical Practice for Research and are PALS-certified. A primary nurse, assigned to each study, serves as the main point of contact.

All investigators must be a credentialed Seattle Children’s provider or collaborate with a credentialed investigator.

The PCRC has many active studies from a broad range of departments/specialties including: Anesthesiology, Adolescent Medicine, Cardiology, Craniofacial, Critical/intensive Care, Emergency, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Pediatrics, Genetics & Developmental Medicine, Hematology/oncology, Infectious Disease/immunology/Rheumatology, Nephrology, Pulmonary, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Rehabilitation Medicine/Occupational Therapy/Prosthetics and Orthotics, General Surgery, Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems, Human Health and Community Medicine-Epidemiology, Social Work.

PCRC Medical Assistant

The PCRC Medical Assistant (MA) is trained to perform the following procedures.

  • Assist the RN in any protocol related procedures
  • Blood Draws
  • EKGs
  • Height, Weight, Head Circumference
  • Specimen Collection: Nails, Saliva, Sputum, Stool, Urine
  • Vital Signs/Pulse Oximetry

PCRC Nurses

The PCRC nurses are trained to perform the following procedures.

  • Allergy skin testing
  • Anaphylaxis monitoring and treatment
  • Assistance with infant pulmonary function testing
  • Assistance with concomitant medication and adverse event collection as allowed per protocol
  • Anthropometrics/Body measurements
  • Blood Draws
  • Central venous catheter access
  • EKG’s
  • Glucose tolerance testing
  • Infusion of investigational agents
  • Intensive/Complex PK-PD collections
  • Intravenous Line Placement (IVs)
  • Lab specimen processing and short term storage
  • Medication distribution
  • Nasogastric Tube Placement (NGs)

  • Nasal Swabs/Throat Swabs/Buccal Swabs for specimen collection or culture
  • Pain assessments
  • Patient monitoring
  • PK studies
  • Plasma/Serum Storage
  • PO, SQ, Topical, IM, and IV medication administration
  • PPD Placement and reading
  • Questionnaire administration, interviews, and surveys
  • Specimen Collection: Nails, Saliva, Sputum, Stool
  • Spirometry
  • Subject education
  • Urine collection, storage
  • Urine pregnancy testing
  • Vital sings including oximetry
  • Will train in any nursing approved protocol procedures

Research Coordinator Core at Seattle Children’s

The Seattle Children’s Research Coordinator Core is a team of experienced clinical research staff available to collaborate with investigators and their research teams in all phases of clinical research.
